About Cannon River Watershed

The Cannon River Watershed spreads across approximately 1,500 square miles in southeastern Minnesota, flowing into the Mississippi River near Red Wing. The watershed encompasses a network of rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands, and surrounding landscapes that support a mix of hardwood forests, prairies, and wetlands. Geographically, it covers portions of Rice, Goodhue, Dakota, Le Sueur, and Wabasha counties. The river itself begins near Faribault and meanders over 100 miles through rolling glacial-aged terrain, carved bluffs, and fertile floodplains. Ecologically, the watershed sustains important habitats for migratory birds, freshwater fish species like smallmouth bass and walleye, and mammals such as white-tailed deer and river otters. Historically, the Cannon River corridor contains numerous Native American archaeological sites, remnants of early European-American settlement, and water-powered milling towns, reflecting over a century of regional development. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a variety of pursuits including canoeing and kayaking on the river, fishing at known access points, hiking along numerous trails in adjacent parks and forest lands, and birdwatching in protected natural areas. Prominent landmarks within the watershed include Lake Byllesby Reservoir, Cannon River Wilderness Area, and Richardson Nature Center. Visitors are drawn by the diverse landscapes, opportunities for water sports, and access to quiet natural areas close to urban centers like Faribault and Northfield. The watershed supports water quality initiatives and conservation efforts focused on maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems and surrounding natural habitats, ensuring recreational and environmental values for future generations.
